Feeding The Aligator

So the anointed one has said that he would negotiate with Taliban moderates. He's not the first, unfortunately, and this brilliant strategy has been welcomed (again) by Hamid Karzai.

Now forgetting for a second that the only thing that separates Karzai from Robert Mugabe is Karzai's reliance on the west, what exactly does this willingness mean?

Well to negotiate there has to be a give and take, compromise must be reached.

The modern liberal world is made up of rights respecting nations. the Taliban, not so much. So I wonder what the difference would be between now...

NATO Leadership: "We will continue to fight the Taliban and their evil ideology."

Taliban: "Allahu Akbar"

and then...

Obama Negotiator: "Ok, so you're allowed to kill homosexuals for being gay as long as you let children fly kites, and women can still be stoned to death for being raped as long as you allow your people to have the odd shot of fermented goats milk with dinner."

Taliban: "Allahu Akbar"

What could possibly go wrong...

What strategy for dealing with the Islamofascists in Afghanistan would you recommend as an alternative?

Has anyone written up such a strategy?

I ask because it always helps to have an alternative to offer.

Well first off I would argue that the Islamofascists are not the ones that we have to reach. what we have not done successfully in Afghanistan is deliver enough security and stability that the local Afghan's feel safe enough to tell the Taliban to go pound salt.

The proposed US troop surge (17,000 troops, thanks America!) would go a long way in that respect unless those troops end up doing nothing more than going on an Osama Bin Laden bug hunt.

Don't get me wrong, I don't expect a quick victory and I am not happy we (Canada) have stamped a best before date on our part in this mission. But I also do not believe that because the region has seen conflict throughout its history that it by default must continue.

In the end, if we (the west) are dedicated to peace in Afghanistan then we must be willing to fight as hard for that as the Taliban are for their screwed up theocracy.
